Pierre Kunz Spirit Diver Depth Gauge Watch Back

The new “Holy Grail” complication for luxury mechanical diving watches is an included depth gauge – applied in various techniques. Many of the established luxury brands who make diving watches have a depth gauge model (such as IWC, Panerai, and Jaeger-LeCoultre). However, in this instance Pierre Kunz’s very first diving watch will be fitted with a depth gauge module. As you can see, the depth gauge will accurately measure depths up to 80 meters (the majority of divers will not exceed this depth) and is placed as a module on the left side of the 44mm wide decorated steel (or Blacktop steel) case with a rubber strap. The watch itself is water resistant to 100 meters. The little touches on the watch are where the luxury comes in from the extremely fine detailing and finishing to the designer dial. Applied hour markers, a multi-level dial, and a quirky subsidiary seconds disc, make for a fantastic style. The dial is done in a material known as texalium (black or silver) or in the pictured lacquered “diver’s flag.”...[Link]

Tissot Seatouch - A High Performance Tactile Watch For Divers

The SEA-Touch by Tissot uses patented technology to ensure that this watch for divers maintains its high performance at all levels – above and below sea level. Right down to a depth of 200 meters, wearers literally have the sophisticated functionality of this high-tech diving watch at their fingertips. As well as being able to tell the time in two time zones and indicate the depth of the current dive, this timepiece integrates a digital chronograph, thermometer, alarm, perpetual calendar date, compass and divers’ logbook, all activated by touch on the glass.

Diving functionality in depth

SEA-Touch fulfils all of the European Norm EN13319 stipulated criteria (divers accessories) – luminosity, shock resistance, anti-magnetism, band solidity and the integration of a time control device. This tactile watch provides a selection of important diving data. When the diver enters the water (minimum depth 1m40), the hands go directly to 9 o’clock. Later the minute hand displays the depth of the dive on the scale around the bezel. The hour hand reveals the speed the diver is moving at in meters per minute on the dial. Excellent visibility comes from highly luminescent material and an effective backlight. Patented technology by Tissot SA on the SEA-Touch ensures that the rubber-protected pushers have double protection and therefore can operate perfectly underwater...[Link]

Baselworld 2009: Ulysse Nardin Diver Perpetual Watch, Limited Edition Of 500 Pieces

The Ulysse Nardin Diver Perpetual Limited Edition watch introduced at Baselworld 2009 deftly combines the unquestioned sporting competence of a diving instrument with a brilliant perpetual calendar complication offering calendar adjustment both forwards and backwards with a simple turn of the crown. The Ulysse Nardin Diver Perpetual Limited Edition watch measures 45mm across, and features a screw-down winding crown protected by polished titanium shoulders. Uncompromising in its exotic flavor, the black carbon fiber dial showcases black skeleton hands and hour markers attired with orange luminous material. Ulysse Nardin's patented big date mechanism appears in the upper right section of the dial, above a triad of windows which display day of the week, the month, and the two-digit year. An applied semi-circular sector at 9 o'clock presents the small seconds on two scales via a black and orange hand...[Vialuxe]

Elegance Under Water

It's a range that stands out in functionality but also captivates the eye in design and appearance.

IWC Schaffhausen has once again extensively revised, both technically and aesthetically, its famous family of diver’s watches, first introduced in 1967 under the name Aquatimer.

This step coincides with a new partnership in support of environmental and marine conservation, which IWC has entered into with the Charles Darwin Foundation in Galapagos to mark the Darwin bicentennial year in 2009.

One of the new Aquatimer models, the Aquatimer Chronograph Edition Galapagos Islands, is specially dedicated to this environmental commitment.
This timepiece is a shining example of the revised watch family in every aspect.

It’s also an attractive and very sporty representation of this new collaboration between IWC and the Charles Darwin Foundation in Galapagos.

Its matte black stainless steel case is completely coated with vulcanised rubber...[NewStraitsTimes]

Pre-Baselworld 2009: Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine Diver Titanium Watch

For Baselworld 2009, Swiss watchmaker Ulysse Nardin unveils a visually captivating new variant of its popular Maxi Marine Diver watch. Polished titanium and rose gold redefine an emblematic Ulysse Nardin sports timepiece, which commands even greater presence on the wrist thanks to a larger case.

The Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine Diver Titanium watch measures 45mm in diameter, a dimension that is just over 2mm greater than other Maxi Marine Diver models. Contrasting with the reflective titanium surfaces is a black dial with a guilloche pattern that suggests undulating ocean waves; the small seconds and power reserve subdials are somewhat more bold than on previous models, and feature hands that have a slightly different shape. The pink gold unidirectional bezel--a feature essential for a true diving watch--displays the graduated scale in polished gold against a wave decorative motif. Also in pink gold is a small medallion on the left side of the case; secured with two screws, it displays the individual number of the watch...[ViaLuxe]

Reactor Watch Faces Extreme Underwater Testing

Watch manufacturer Reactor said its Gamma water sport watch has been attached to a shipwreck submerged in 300 feet of saltwater off the Southeast coast of Florida, where it will remain for three years, exposing the watch continually to the harsh conditions.

Testing will be monitored once a year by expert diver Mike Barnette, co-founder of the Association of Underwater Explorers.

“Our Gamma pushes the limits of our core design,” Jimmy Olmes, founder of the Agoura Hills, Calif.-based wacth brand. “It is built as strongly as we know how to make a watch today, and we want to know just what it is capable of.”

Reactor’s Gamma is built on an oversized 45.5 mm case that is forged from solid 316L marine-grade stainless steel and is depth tested to 990 feet. The case is capped by a K-1 crystal with four layers of antiglare coating that makes it easily readable under water, and is sealed with Reactor’s exclusive triple o-ring screw-down crown system. The quartz day/date movement features a 10-year lithium power cell, and Reactor expects the watch to maintain the correct time during its entire three-year submersion...[JCKOnline.com]

The first modern diver’s watch

One of the most desirable technological boys toys throughout the last 50 years has been the Blancpain 50 fathoms watch. The Fifty Fathoms watch was born in the 1950s when Blancpain was asked by the French Ministry of Defence to create an elite “Combat Divers” watch that was reliable and readable to a depth of 50 fathoms (91.45 metres). Blancpain delivered, and the hardcore military kit was subsequently commercialised in 1953 with the first modern diver’s watch - that's an original 1954 advert at right. A new exhibition opens tomorrow in Geneva, the Cité du Temps, tracing the history of the watch with all the models and variations of the collection assembled under a single roof...[Gizmag]

Richard Mille RM025 - Diver's Watch With Tourbillon And Chronograph

Celebrated high luxury watchmaker Richard Mille has introduced a remarkable diver's timepiece which showcases the horological exclusivity expected of this brand in a 50.70mm-diameter round case. The first Richard Mille model to dispense with the signature tonneau form, the RM 025 Tourbillon Chronograph Diver's watch has been specifically designed to effectively resist the pressure found 300 meters below the ocean's surface.

Created to correspond with the strict standards of ISO 6425, which establishes certain norms for dive timepieces, the Richard Mille RM025 Tourbillon Chronograph Diver's case is notable for both its secure water-tight construction, and intricate workmanship. Constructed from a combination of red or white gold and titanium, it features a tripartite structure joined together with torque screws that permit a particularly precise and even pressure-sealing; the unidirectional rotating bezel is equally elaborate, being comprised of three layers, all joined by a system of 24 screws. In addition to the perfect tactile feel of the bezel movement these screws allow, they also preclude any chance the bezel will be dislodged from the case. A screw-down crown and specially designed chronograph pushers contribute to the impressive water resistance rating...[ViaLuxe.com]

CX SWISS MILITARY WATCH ARGONAUT 1000 TQ

Argonaut1000 TQ is a professional diver’s instrument from the CX Swiss Military Watch brand, which won a Guinness world record in 2006 for its 12,000ft capability. The titanium 1000 TQ, pictured left, is described as a solid, powerful watch which is very light. Based on the 2007 model, this new-generation style is equipped with a helium escapement valve that protects the movement from the pressure of the water and guarantees total water-resistance to 1000 metres, the company said.

Powered by an automatic movement housed in a steel case, it has a chronograph function and extendible rubber strap. The 46mm diver’s watch features over-sized luminescent hands and hourmarkers for easy reading underwater. The extra-large crown, developed for easy use in any situation, and the graduated 60-minute unidirectional rotating bezel are also designed for diving security. To Dive for...

You might find yourself needing a built-in depth gauge on your watch so you can accurately measure how far underwater you are. Or, given that most of you are not wearing fins and a breathing apparatus, maybe you’ll just like the gauge because it’s the kind of sexy “complication”—in watch-geek parlance—that horology aficionados drool over.

Officine Panerai’s latest version of the Luminor diving watch comes with a pedigree that excites the brand’s stalkers (often called “Paneristi”) who snap up limited editions like this one. Developed from their role as instrument suppliers to Italian Navy frogmen during World War II, the Luminor 1950 saw Panerai combine watch and depth gauge in a single instrument for the first time...[WSJ Magazine]
